As the first of its kind in the Arab world, the project will provide scientific and intellectual content on the Internet with no limitations or obstacles and without prejudice to the intellectual proprietary rights of its respective authors. "It will be beneficial to wide segments of readers and researchers around the world, as it maintains the content of libraries and allows retrieving this data easily, anytime, anywhere. The project also fosters positive interaction between member libraries and the public."

The Digital Repository has helpful features such as video streaming for audio-visual content, reading rare books by providing page turning function, among others. These features further support the realization of the Sharjah Libraries' vision in digital transformation, allowing for access to scientific and intellectual materials and production, and supporting free access to information for library goers.

Other epistemological resources available on the Digital Repository include the content of the audio-visual section (including video and audio tapes, and disks), rare books available in Sharjah libraries, manuscripts, as well as Iqra Magazine, Department of Culture and Information's Al Rafed Magazine, and other publications of the Department. The Digital Repository content also includes guidebooks and publication lists of Sharjah libraries, annual statistics of Sharjah libraries, literary content of governmental entities in Sharjah Government, public free books, historical materials with outdated legal protection, content originally produced for the public by individuals or entities, in addition to studies and research.

المستودع الرقمي لمكتبات الشارقة،
يمثل جيل ما بعد المكتبات الرقمية، ويعتبر الأول من نوعه في الوطن العربي، ويهدف إلى إتاحة الإنتاجات العلمية والفكرية على الشبكة العنكبوتية دون قيود أو عوائق مع الحفاظ على الملكية الفكرية لأصحابها.

وتكمن أهمية المشروع في أنه يعمل على حفظ مقتنيات المكتبات، المكتوبة والمرئية والمسموعة، والصور والخرائط والملفات، كما يسمح بالتكامل والارتباط المباشر مع فهارسها، وهو ما يوفر للجمهور فرصة الحصول على المصادر التي يرغبون بها في موقع واحد، ودون الحاجة لزيارة المكتبات. وإن مشروع المستودع الرقمي لمكتبات الشارقة، والذي سيفيد قطاعات كبيرة من القراء والباحثين والمهتمين في أنحاء العالم كافة، حيث يسهم هذا المشروع في الحفاظ على مقتنيات المكتبات، وخاصة النادرة منها، ويتيح استرجاعها بسهولة من أي مكان، كما يعمل على تعزيز التفاعل الإيجابي بين المكتبات والجمهور» . وهذا المشروع يتيح الوصول إلى مصادر المعلومات المودعة بالمستودع الرقمي للمكتبات من خلال التصفح أو عن طريق البحث أو بكليهما معاً، بسهولة تامة، مشيراً إلى أن الشارقة تسعى من خلال هذه المشروع إلى أن تكون سبّاقة عربياً وإقليمياً في تحقيق تمكين المعرفة، عبر تبسيط وتسريع الوصول إليها من دون أية عوائق جغرافية أو فنية.

خصائص ويتميّز المستودع الرقمي بخصائص عدة منها توفير خدمة «مطابقة الأقراص» للأقراص المدمجة، و«تدفق الفيديو» للمواد السمع بصرية، وكذلك عرض الكتب وخصوصاً النادرة منها بخاصية «تقليب الصفحات»، وغيرها من الخصائص التي تدعم رؤية مكتبات الشارقة في التحول الرقمي، وإتاحة المواد والإنتاجات العلمية والفكرية ودعم الوصول الحر للمعلومات لرواد هذه المكتبات.
تنوع وتتضمن أنواع المصادر المعرفية المتاحة ضمن المستودع الرقمي: محتوى قاعة السمع بصري (فيديو، كاسيت، أقراص ممغنطة)، والكتب النادرة في مكتبات الشارقة، إضافة إلى مجلة «اقرأ»، ومجلة «الرافد» الصادرة عن دائرة الثقافة والإعلام، إلى جانب إصدارات الدائرة
